Bebop Robinson

Our friend Bebop Robinson is a Portland Oregon based drum teacher, drum maker and facilitator. We met Master Bop in late 2004 when he showed his awesome Sono Bamboula drums to the Junkmusic Group at Yahoo. This immediately sent us searching for history and background information on Bamboula. As it turns out, the bamboula has a fascinating history throughout the African Diaspora, inculding French Colonial New Orleans. We are starting a page on Bamboula, with Bebop's kind assistance. stay tuned for more...

Bamboula Drums
These Sono Tube Bamboula drums are extremely versatile, with a wide range of available tones and pitches. They are suitable for use with hands or sticks/mallets. Soon we'll have some sound files up. He has drum making kits available. have a look at these (the copy is from Bop's literature):

The Bamboula Drum Kit
"The Bamboula Drum Kit is an unassembled drum that comes with instructions and workshop options. It is an excellent way to build and customize your very own drum."

"You select the color, add your personal touch and in a short time (About 3 1/2 hours in our workshops) you will have your very own Bamboula Drum!!!!"

The Drum Making Workshop
"The centerpiece of these workshops is a Bamboula Drum Kit. During its assembly, we cover some history and mythology of drumming, along with construction, maintenance and tuning of your drum."

"A lesson on playing technique and a facilitated drumming circle are also included to ensure a total drum experience for you."

You can reach master Bop by calling 503.590.3087 or by e-mailing BeBop503 @ Yahoo.com

You can play one or a set of bamboula drums. The most common set is 8", 10", and 12"

The 8” Bamboula Drum
This 8”x18” drum has a voice range for playing lead or the drive rhythm like the bongo, quinto or d’jimbe

The 10” Bamboula Drum
Its 10”x18” body has a mid-range voice like that of a conga or a kenkeni dunun.

The 12” Bamboula Drum
has a 12”x20” body that yields a lead bass voice, not unlike a Tumba or Sangban Dunun
