You should be familiar with the material on Practice Tape #1 and the material on the instructional video, A Sense of Time, by Layne Redmond which lays the ground work for the material in this tape. BASIC STROKES: K - Kah, hand hits and sticks to drum. D - Doum, whole index finger hits head and bounces off. T - Tak, tip of 4th finger hits rim and sticks. C - Cha, Palm of hand right below fingers hits the rim of the drum, not the head. t - is tick, a sound on the jingle made with the fourth finger. This sheet is written with the assumption that the dominant hand is the right. Count the thumb as 1, index finger as 2, middle finger as 3, ring finger as 4 and little finger as 5. Tambourine Rhythms in 3 The following patterns will all be played on a tambourine in the Middle Eastern style. When playing a rhythm in three over a walking pulse that divides time into four beats it takes a total of twelve beats to have the first beat of the three pattern come out on the pulse of your walking. Putting Shakes into the Rhythms * To put shakes into these exercises, replace t (tick) with shakes. To do shakes, you always start by shaking back and then forward. It you have two ticks in a row the shakes replace them time-wise. If there is only one tick followed by a Doum, Tak, Kah or Cha, the forward shake must combine with the stroke.
